Almost in every culture in the world there is a celebration of thanks for rich harvest. The American Thanksgiving began as a feast of thanksgiving almost four hundred years ago. In 1620, a religious community sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to settle in the New World. They settled in what is now known as the state of Massachusetts.
Thanksgiving Day Their first winter in America was difficult. They arrived too late to grow a rich harvest. Moreover, half the colony died from disease. The following spring the Iroquois Indians taught them how to grow corn. Indians showed them also how to grow other crops and how to hunt and fish.
Thanksgiving Day In the autumn of 1621 they got a beautiful harvest of corn, barley, beans and pumpkins. The colonists had much to be thankful for, so they planned a feast. Local Indian chief and ninety Indians were present. The colonists learned from Indians how to cook cranberries and dishes of corn and pumpkins.

Americans of all religions celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November. Thanksgiving is a special day for families and people travel great distances to be with their families. They give thanks for the food and blessings.
The tradition started when in 1620 a group of men , women and children left England on a ship called Mayflower. They were pilgrims and they wanted to start a new life in the New World
The voyage was very hard.They were cold and hungry and many of them died. The voyage took 65 days. They landed on the north –east coast of North America. What today we know as Massachusetts. When they arrived it was almost winter so they had no time to grow crops. The winter was long. Very few survived.
In spring native Americans, the wampanoag Indians, helped them. They taught the pilgrims how to grow corn, how to hunt and how to fish. The summer harvest was very good and by november, a year after their first arrival, there was food for everybody.
The pilgrims wanted to celebrate it and invited the native Americans to a great dinner where they gave thanks to God for the food. That was the first Thanksgiving.
Today the traditional thanksgiving meal is similar to the first. They eat roast turkey with cranberry sauce, potatoes, corn and pumpkin pie.
The pilgrims were thankful for the help from the Indians. So, Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful! Most families go around the table and say something they are thankful for before eating.

Origin of Thanksgiving Day Thanksgiving is America"s preeminent day. It is celebrated every year on the fourth Thursday in the month of November. It has a very interesting history. Its origin can be traced back to the 16th century when the first thanksgiving dinner is said to have taken place. Journey of Pilgrims The legendary pilgrims, crossed the Atlantic in the year 1620 in Mayflower-A 17th Century sailing vessel. About 102 people traveled for nearly two months with extreme difficulty. This was so because they were kept in the cargo space of the sailing vessel. No one was allowed to go on the deck due to terrible storms. The pilgrims comforted themselves by singing Psalms- a sacred song.

Parades The traditional Thanksgiving parade probably started with President Lincoln proclaiming it an official day. The full- dress parade is a way to display the country"s military strength and discipline. The main aim of such parades is to lift the spirits of the spectators, provide them with wholesome entertainment. In the present day, parades are accompanied with musical shows and celebrities.

First Thanksgiving day The first Thanksgiving day was celebrated by pilgrims in autumn of 1621. They were European travelers who sailed on “Mayflower” ship and tried to find the New World. Первый День благодарения отмечался пилигримами (паломниками) осенью 1621 года. Это были европейские путешественники, которые плыли на корабле « Мейфлауэ » и пытались найти Новый Свет.
Native American Indians Before their arrival to America the country was inhabited by Native American Indians. До их прибытия в Америку страну населяли коренные американские индейцы.
Difficult life However, when they settled here, life was quite difficult. There was nothing to eat and nowhere to live. Однако когда они поселились здесь, жизнь была достаточно сложной. Им нечего было есть, и негде было жить.
First winter First winter was especially difficult and many people couldn’t survive without fresh food. Первая зима была особенно трудной, и многие люди не смогли выжить без свежих продуктов.
In spring In spring Native Indians taught pilgrims how to survive in America. They now could hunt, fish and grow plants. Весной индейцы научили паломников, как выживать в Америке. Теперь они могли охотиться, ловить рыбу и выращивать растения.
In autumn In the autumn of 1621 they had a wonderful harvest. To celebrate this occasion pilgrims decided to have a Thanksgiving feast. It meant that they were very thankful for their food. Pumpkin pie The most popular dessert is a pumpkin pie. Самый популярный десерт тыквенный пирог.
In Canada People in Canada also celebrate Thanksgiving day but it falls on every second Thursday of October. Люди в Канаде также празднуют День благодарения, но это выпадает на каждый второй четверг октября.
